Wire Fraud Warning
Verify every payment instruction before sending funds.
Real estate transactions are frequent targets of impersonation and payment-diversion fraud. Treat every wire instruction as high risk.
Before sending funds
Call a trusted, independently verified phone number and read back the routing and account information. Do not use phone numbers contained only in the email carrying the instructions.
Warning signs
Be cautious of new payment accounts, last-minute changes, urgency, secrecy, altered email addresses, unusual grammar or requests to bypass normal verification.
Our communication rule
Everest Insurance will not ask you to accept a last-minute change to wire instructions solely by email. Stop and verify any change through a known contact.
If you sent funds
Immediately contact your bank’s fraud department and request a recall or freeze. Then contact the known transaction professionals and report the incident to law enforcement, including the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center at ic3.gov.
